Mr. Hermanze Fauntleroy

The first black mayor of Petersburg, Mr. Hermanze Fauntleroy, gives this extensive interview sharing many stories from various stages of his life. Born and raised in Petersburg by parents who were very active in the NAACP, Mr. Fauntleroy sheds light on how he began to realize the education he received at Peabody High School was greatly different than the education the white students received at Petersburg High. He continues to share experiences from his time on the Petersburg City Council during the time of white flight and integration of the high schools in Petersburg. In his stories, Mr. Fauntleroy eloquently describes local and national events leading up to the civil rights movement.
